The whole world was confronted with a frightening realization as we approached the year 2000. It had become fashionable for many people to work with computers, and many more depended on the efficiency of computerized machines and digital equipment. In many countries of the two-thirds world where electricity supply is unreliable, this efficiency translated into many hours lost waiting for power to be restored. In the meantime, skilled labour sat idle and time flew!
