With the ADEA/AUC High-Level Regional Workshop on National Book and Reading Policies in Africa, the continent has undoubtedly taken a significant step forward. As an official within a literary organisation, I am aware that many countries—my own included—have struggled to develop a comprehensive national book and reading policy. Most existing reading policies are shallow, often limited to school textbooks.
The African Union–backed Continental Book and Reading Policy Framework is far more inclusive. It addresses numerous aspects of the book and education sectors: literacy, indigenous languages, publishing, schools, libraries, authors, copyright, and book promotion, among others.
