Cameroonian author Hemley Boum has won the 2025 Prix des Cinq Continents de la Francophonie for her novel Le rêve du pêcheur (The Dream of the Fisherman), published by Gallimard. The award was presented on 20 March 2025 at the Salle Wagram in Paris, in the presence of notable guests including Louise Mushikiwabo, Secretary General of La Francophonie, and Dany Laferrière, member of the French Academy.
The novel follows a Cameroonian family navigating the challenges of migration to France, exploring themes of rootedness, exile, and cultural memory. Boum’s poetic language and her skillful blending of past and present, different cultures, and the tensions between belonging and displacement were widely praised by the jury.
