PublisHer made its debut in Africa at the 30th edition of the International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL), held in Rabat, Morocco, from 17 to 27 April 2025. This major event, one of the largest literary gatherings on the continent, officially attracted more than 316,000 visitors and brought together 743 exhibitors from 48 countries. PublisHer’s participation marked a significant step in its commitment to promoting gender inclusivity within the publishing industry, particularly in Africa, where women remain underrepresented in leadership positions.
The PublisHer initiative was founded by Bodour Al Qasimi, former president of the International Publishers Association (IPA) and founder of the Emirates Publishers Association. Her career in publishing revealed a persistent lack of women in senior roles. Reflecting on the project’s origins, Bodour shared that early in her career she was often the only woman in male-dominated meetings—an experience that profoundly impacted her and inspired the creation of PublisHer. The global initiative aims to ensure women’s voices are heard at all levels across the publishing and creative sectors.
